On April 1, 2003, a grade nine student was killed in the wooded area behind the school. Police charged a 14-year-old boy with first degree murder. Under the Youth Criminal Justice Act, which came into effect that day, the students' names would not be released. According to police, the victim and accused knew each other, and they believe the alleged assailant acted alone. A Tree was planted outside of the school commemorating his memory.
