The story begins with Alonzo Hawk (Keenan Wynn); an overambitious, wealthy, opportunistic, ruthless man whose dream is to build his real-estate empire to a world power. His primary goal is to replace old buildings, some of which have historical significance, with shiny new skyscrapers. Their historical/humanitarian value mean nothing to him.
