Born as Holt McAloney, one of the two sons born to Michael McAloney, an Irish actor and producer, and the Tony Award-winning actress and singer Julie Wilson. He was raised by his maternal grandparents after his parents' divorce in Omaha, Nebraska until the age of 14.
That year he ran away to Los Angeles to pursue his dream of becoming an actor. Instead, he wound up working in a screwdriver factory in Gardena, California unloading trucks. His parents tracked him down and shipped him off to a Catholic boarding school in Dublin, the same school his father had attended some forty years earlier. Upon graduating high school he moved to Paris, France to study theater at the École Marcel Marceau. After his course of study in France, he returned to New York where he was cast as an understudy in the Broadway production of Neil Simon's Biloxi Blues.
