The family take Bart to dinner at the Singing Sirloin restaurant (as seen in "Life on the Fast Lane") for getting his first "A" in an astronomy quiz. When asked how he achieved this rarity, Bart explains he stayed behind at school to try and force a hamster and a lizard to mate but was forced to study to get his mind off seeing Mrs Krabappel and Principal Skinner making out in the classroom. After eating, Homer attempts to pay but his credit card is rejected and the family is forced to run away without paying. Homer and Marge realise that the family is in financial trouble so Marge suggests that Homer ask his boss, Mr Burns, for a raise. Mr Smithers, Burns' assistant, takes a week off work to perform in Malibu Stacy: The Musical in New Mexico so during the week Burns attempts to perform all of Smithers' tasks himself.
