Homeworld 2 was released in late 2003. Relic Studios was bought by THQ, a competitor of publishers Sierra and Vivendi, who owned the Homeworld license shortly after the release.
In November 2007, THQ confirmed that it had acquired the license for the Homeworld franchise.
Homeworld 2 shares the movement system and three-dimensional play area of its predecessor. Units are moved three-dimensionally using a combination of mouse movements and key presses to modify the y-axis of the destination position.
