Jack Lemmon plays handsome bachelor Stanley Ford, a successful cartoonist who is happily unmarried and enjoying all the creature comforts one could desire, including a loyal and attentive valet, Charles Firbank (Terry-Thomas), who ensures that all his material and health needs are met. Stanley's comic strip, Bash Brannigan, is a secret-agent thriller, whose main attraction is its essential realism: no matter how outrageous the plot may seem, Stanley will not allow Brannigan to do anything physically impossible, or use gadgets that don't exist. He hires actors and sets up elaborate enactments of storylines, playing Brannigan himself, with Firbank taking photographs which are later used as models for the cartoon's art.
