His mother was Isabella of Angoulême, the former queen of England, and he was therefore the eldest of Henry III's half-brothers. He had a daughter, Marie in 1242.
By his marriage in January 1236 to Yolande de Dreux, Countess of Penthievre and of Porhoet (1218 – 10 October 1272, buried at Villeneuve-lez-Nantes), he had seven children.
Hugh was killed on 6 April 1250 in battle in Faruskur, Egypt. He was on Crusade with King Louis IX. His son Hugh XII succeeded him as Seigneur de Lusignan, Couhe, et de Peyrat, and as Count of La Marche and Angouleme.
