His parents are natives of Nigeria and moved to the United States in 1980 to pursue further education. He later moved from Buffalo, New York to Garland, Texas and went to Austin Academy for middle school then enrolled in Garland High School. His family includes cousins Onye, Obinnaya, and Adonna Ihenacho and uncle Ugochu Ihenacho. Diogu is a member of the Igbo ethnic group.
Diogu stands at 6 feet (1.8 m), 9 inches (2.06 m) tall which is considered slightly undersized for an NBA power forward, but makes up for his lack of height with his muscle and 7'4" wingspan.
