The Intrepid class is a fictional Starfleet starship class in the Star Trek universe, the most notable being Star Trek: Voyager's titular USS Voyager. Out of the starships which are the focal point for various television series and films in the Star Trek franchise, the Intrepid is among the smallest, particularly compared to the several vessels named Enterprise.
In real life, the Intrepid class was designed by Star Trek: Voyager production designer Richard D. James and illustrator Rick Sternbach.
Variable geometry pylons allow Voyager and other Intrepid-class ships to exceed Warp 5 without damaging subspace. Voyager was also the first ship to utilize bio-neural computer technology, which makes use of packets of bio-neural gel. The storage medium is RNA-based, which allows starship computers to accomplish computations almost at the speed of biological entities.
The Intrepid class has the capability to land on a planet's surface, first shown by Voyager in the episode "The 37s".
