Wrangler was born John Robert Stillman in Beverly Hills, California. His father was Hollywood film and television producer Robert Stillman, who directed such films as Champion, Boots and Saddles, Second Chorus, and Home of the Brave and produced television series such as Bonanza. His mother, Ruth Clark Stillman, was a former dancer in Busby Berkeley musicals.
