He is a veteran of five space missions and lived on the International Space Station for five and a half months.
Born March 3, 1949, in Cordova, Alabama, but considers Opelika, Alabama, to be his hometown. He is married to the former Suzan Curry of Birmingham, Alabama; they have one daughter, Kristie. He enjoys woodworking, skiing, softball, racquetball, scuba diving, and flying an airplane he built himself. As an undergraduate, he participated on the Auburn University wrestling Team. He was also a member of Beta Zeta Chapter of the Theta Xi Fraternity, where he served as Chapter President for the school year 1970-71.
