Kavandi graduated Valedictorian in 1977 from Carthage Senior High School - Carthage, Missouri. Kavandi worked for Boeing during the 1980s on defense projects.
Kavandi was selected as an astronaut candidate by NASA in December 1994 and reported to the Johnson Space Center in March 1995.
