Rush played at UCLA along with current NBA star Baron Davis and former NBA player Jerome Moiso. He declared for the NBA draft in 2000 after his sophomore year, but was not selected. However, he was signed by the Seattle SuperSonics in that preseason, but due to drinking problems was eventually cut from the roster during training camp.
He played high school basketball at The Pembroke Hill School, leading the team to three State Championships. The three State Titles were eventually stripped from The Pembroke Hill School after AAU Coach Myron Piggie pleaded guilty to a conspiracy charge for paying $35,500 to five high school players on his Kansas City-based team from 1996-98. The players were Corey Maggette, JaRon Rush, Kareem Rush, Korleone Young and Andre Williams.
