Ritter was born in Los Angeles, California, the son of Nancy Morgan and the late John Ritter, and the grandson of musician/actor Tex Ritter and Dorothy Fay. His stepmother is Amy Yasbeck. His siblings are Carly, Tyler, and Stella Ritter. Ritter is a graduate of New York University's Tisch School of the Arts, where he studied at the Atlantic Theatre Company. He also studied at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art in London.
Ritter appeared in The Dreamer of Oz: The L. Frank Baum Story. He spent nine years in his first TV series Days of our Lives as "Todd".
