Jay commented on the Late Late Show that he is of Scottish ancestry and that he comes from a long line of sheep herders. He has been sober since 1997. In December 2008, he filed legal papers requesting a legal name change to Jon Ferguson Cox Mohr, adding the surname of his wife.
