Jenny von Westphalen's father, Johann Ludwig von Westphalen, the first Freiherr (Baron) von Westphalen (1770-1842), a former widower with four previous children, served as a professor at Friedrich-Wilhelms-Universität in Berlin. Her mother, the Freiherr's second wife Caroline Heubel, lived from c. 1775 to 1856. Jenny von Westphalen had no sisters; her brother Edgar, Freiherr von Westphalen (born in Trier on March 26, 1819) died in Berlin on September 30, 1890.
Her paternal grandfather Christian Heinrich von Westphalen (1723-1792) married Jenny Wishart of Pittarow (1742-1811), from Scottish nobility, a relation of the Earl of Argyll.
