Butler was born Paul Siederman in Brooklyn to a Jewish father and a mother of half German/Irish and half Cherokee Native American descent. His paternal grandfather, Sam Siederman, was the half-brother of Russian Communist leader Leon Trotsky. Butler was an aspiring ice hockey player during his youth, and made it as far as minor league professional playing for the New Haven Nighthawks, a New York Rangers farm team. After a barrage of serious injuries, Butler's hockey future was uncertain, and he set his sights on a different career.
