Gilsig was born in Montreal, Quebec, the daughter of Clare, a writer and translator, and Toby Gilsig, an engineer. She began acting at age 12. She attended high school at Trafalgar School for Girls in downtown Montreal. She later attended Harvard University’s American Repertory Theater and attended McGill University from 1989 to 1993 and graduated with a degree in English. Gilsig's marriage to film producer Bobby Salomon was featured in the Summer 2005 issue of InStyle magazine. She and Salomon had their first child, Penelope, on September 26, 2006. Gilsig is Jewish on her father's side and married her husband in a traditional Jewish wedding.
