Jim Day first came to international prominence at the 1967 Pan American Games when he won gold in the individual equestrian competition. In 1968, he was a member of Canada's gold-medal equestrian team at the Summer Olympics in Mexico City. At 22 years of age, Day was the youngest member of the show jumping team. In the 1972 Olympics in Munich he finished 4th individually, losing the bronze by one-quarter of a time fault. As a teenager, Day had become acquainted with Ernie Samuel (1931-2000) who at the time was also interested in show jumping. In 1971, Ernie Samuel, by then a successful businessman, purchased his first thoroughbred race horse and offered Day the job of training for his newly formed Sam-Son Farm.
