McDermott is a member of the Democratic Party. He serves on the House Ways and Means Committee and is a member of the House Progressive Caucus. He has consistently received strong support from his district, taking 84% of the popular vote in 2008, easily winning against Republican challenger Steve Beren.
McDermott was born in Chicago, Illinois.
