A former marketing executive for Shell, Carr moved to a career in comedy in 2000. After becoming established as a stand-up comedian, Carr began to appear in a number of Channel 4 television shows, most notably as the host of the panel show 8 Out of 10 Cats.
Contrary to other internet sources, Carr was born in Isleworth, London to Irish parents from Limerick, as opposed to himself being born in Limerick, as he stated in an interview on The Chris Moyles Show. However, he does hold an Irish passport.
Carr attended Burnham Grammar School and Royal Grammar School, High Wycombe before gaining a place at Gonville and Caius College, Cambridge, where he graduated with a 2:1 degree in Political Sciences.
