Reiher began wrestling in the late 1990s, and worked for the UWA and the Xcitement Wrestling Federation. Ater signing a contract with World Wrestling Entertainment (WWE), Reiher was assigned to WWE's developmental territory Ohio Valley Wrestling (OVW) in Louisville, Kentucky in 2005, where he wrestled under the name Deuce Shade. He was placed in tag team competition, alongside Dice Domino, and they won the OVW Southern Tag Team Championship on three occasions. It was also during this time that he and Domino, alongside their manager Cherry, were known as the group The Throw-Backs and later The Untouchables. Also at OVW, Reiher won the OVW Television Championship in one occasion in singles competition.
