The spelling 'Scottus' has the authority of the early manuscripts until perhaps the 11th century. Occasionally he is also named 'Scottigena' ("Scot-born") in the manuscripts.
Eriugena was highly proficient in Greek, which was rare at that time in mainland Europe, and was thus well-placed for translation work.
