The Right Reverend John Lonsdale (January 17, 1788 – October 19, 1867) was the third Principal of King's College London who later served as Bishop of Lichfield.

The Right Reverend John Lonsdale (January 17, 1788 – October 19, 1867) was the third Principal of King's College London who later served as Bishop of Lichfield.
He was educated at Eton College and King's College, Cambridge, and went on to become Principal of King's College London in 1838 following the death of Hugh James Rose. Lonsdale had actively supported the foundation of the College in 1828 and in 1838 was already an established member of Council. Lonsdale presided over a period of growth and optimism at King's with the opening of the new hospital and reorganisation of senior teaching in the College by the creation of the new Department of General Literature and Science. He resigned from his post in 1843 when he was made Bishop of Lichfield.
