Hailing from Emmanuel College Warrnambool in Victoria's south west, Brown was drafted by the Brisbane Lions in the 1999 AFL Draft under the Father-Son Rule. He subsequently made the move to Brisbane and was immediately groomed as the club's centre half forward.
