Dr. Knowles was elected a director of Genentech in February 1998. He
joined The Roche Group as head of global research in September 1997. In
January 1998, he became a member of the Corporate Executive Committee
of The Roche Group. Dr. Knowles also serves as a member of the Board of
Directors of Chugai Pharmaceutical Co., Ltd., a subsidiary of Roche.
Pursuant to the affiliation agreement, Dr. Knowles is a designee of
Roche.
