Julian Koster is an American underground musician and storyteller. A member of the Elephant 6 Collective, he is the leader of The Music Tapes, and a former member of Neutral Milk Hotel and Chocolate USA. He is also an influential and long time performer on the singing or Musical Saw. Koster has routinely staged highly unusual tours and created games for performance at secret locations and private homes. He is believed to be closely connected to the secretive Major Organ and the Adding Machine. Like many other members of the Elephant 6 Collective, Koster has made appearances, both live and in the studio, for a number of Elephant 6 bands. Koster is also a vegan.
In 1989, Koster formed Miss America with Liza Wakeman, Alan Edwards, Paul Wells and Keith Block. After legal threats from Miss America, they became Chocolate USA. Chocolate USA released two albums on Bar/None before disbanding to follow other projects.
