KBCI originally signed on as KBOI-TV with CBS, ABC and DuMont affiliations. By 1974 the ABC affiliation went to new sign-on KIVI, leaving KBOI with CBS. After its co-owned radio stations were sold, its call letters were changed to KBCI. The KBCI call letters were chosen because at the time, the station had a sign consisting of 10 to 12-foot (3.7 m) high metal letters "KBOI" on the front of its studio, and the station could make the old sign match the new call letters simply by sawing out a section of the "O."
KBCI, along with KIVI, have hour-long newscasts in the evening.
