Wayans was born in Harlem, New York City, son of Howell Wayans, a supermarket manager, and his wife Elvira, a homemaker and social worker. His parents were devout Jehovah's Witnesses. Wayans attended Tuskegee University, where he became a member of Alpha Phi Alpha, the first intercollegiate Greek-letter fraternity established for African-Americans.
