Hernandez grew up in Pacifica, California and Millbrae, California. He was a star athlete at Capuchino High School in San Bruno, from which he graduated in 1971. One of his teammates was future major league pitcher Bob McClure, who had also played Little League baseball with him when they were younger.
Hernandez was perceived as having poor attitude issues because he sat out his entire senior year of high school due to a dispute with a coach.
