Lo was born in Laos on March 17, 1959. But in 1975, he moved from Cambodia when he was 15 years old, and then to Udon Thani, Thailand. Then 5 years later, in 1980 he fled to Hong Kong in where he took a job as a tour guide. His idol was Bruce Lee which led him to practice Muay Thai and Taekwondo in Thailand. He won the freestyle fighting championships seven times so his chance finally came with his first movie Working Class (1985) starring Samuel Hui directed by Tsui Hark.
In 1986, Lo met Jackie Chan in a popular disco in Hong Kong, where he was head of security and Jackie hired him as his own bodyguard.
