Named Harambee Star, the aircraft involved in the accident was an Airbus A310-304, tail number 5Y-BEN, that had been bought new by the airline in 1986. With c/n 426 and equipped with a twin-GE CF6-80C2A2 powerplant, the airframe had its maiden flight on 3 July 1986 with registration F-WWCQ, and was delivered to Kenya Airways on 24 September the same year.
