O'Connor was born in Chicago, Illinois, the son of Patricia Connelly, a teacher, and James O'Connor, a police officer. He has a brother, Christopher O'Connor, who teaches art and Latin at Ted Lenart Regional Gifted Center on Chicago's South Side.
He trained as an actor at the Goodman School of Drama at DePaul University. In Chicago, he appeared in the stage production El Salvador by Raphael Lima (1989) at the Steppenwolf Theatre. He made his New York Off Broadway debut in The Colorado Catechism by Vincent J. Cardinal (1990) at the Circle Repertory Company.
