Reynolds is the son of former Baylor University President Herbert H. Reynolds. He grew up in the small town of North East, Maryland. Upon completion of High School, he went on the join the Army as a Medic. He spent several years continuing his education at Cecil Community College and University of Maryland Univeristy College, where he received his B.S. in Fire Science. He went on to work at University of Maryland Medical Center, and returned to school to complete his M.B.A. with Loyola University.
Reynolds enjoyed initial successes writing the Cold War cult hit Red Dawn in 1984 and writing and directing the Steven Spielberg-produced Fandango in 1985.
