The New Kitakyushu Airport opened on March 16, 2006 and has stimulated the local economy through tourism and business trips.
There are multiple metropolitan area definitions for this area, with populations ranging from 1.15 million to 2.4 million people, depending on definition. Please see ja:北九州都市圏.
