In 2292, K'mpec graduated from the Klingon Defense Forces Elite Command Academy, being the first student in the class of 2292 to understand the extent of the Federation's power as a strategic adversary, and being the one to suggest a clever simulation tactic to bring down a massive Federation space station without sufficient ships available for a direct assault. In the final battle of the ensuing civil war, he was instrumental to ultimate victory.
The year K'mpec became chancellor is unknown. However, upon his death, Captain Jean-Luc Picard notes that K'mpec had served as chancellor longer than anyone else in history. K'mpec had also known and served with Mogh, father of Worf and Kurn.
