It has hosted concerts by U2, Depeche Mode, Shania Twain, Westlife, a-ha, Aerosmith, Anastacia, Tina Turner, Coldplay, Mariah Carey, Shakira, Christina Aguilera, Gwen Stefani, Britney Spears, Backstreet Boys, Destiny's Child, Bruce Springsteen, Kylie Minogue, Tokio Hotel and Celine Dion. Kölnarena opened in 1998 and can accommodate 20,000 spectators.
In 2 June 2008 it was announced that the arena will be renamed to Lanxess Arena after the specialty chemicals group Lanxess AG, for a ten year deal.
In January 2009, Tina Turner opened her first European tour in nearly a decade entitled Tina!: 50th Anniversary Tour before four sell-out crowds at the arena.
