The station began operations in 1996, taking the Fox affiliation from KAME channel 21, of which it is co-owned with by Cox Enterprises. Its transmitter is located in Reno. KRXI-TV's digital subchannel is affiliated with Retro Television Network and started on January 7, 2008.
The station was depicted in the episode "Drive" of The X-Files as part of a police chase that took place during the show.
Virtual channels
After the analog television shutdown scheduled for June 12, 2009, KRXI-DT moved to channel 44. PSIP is used to display KRXI's virtual channel as 11 on digital television receivers.
KRXI simulcasts newscasts from sister station KTVU in the San Francisco Bay Area.
