Lady Sovereign was born Louise Amanda Harman to Nicola Wood and Aden Harman. She was raised in North West London's Chalkhill Council Estate in Wembley. She was influenced by her mother's Salt-N-Pepa albums and began writing her own raps at the age of 14. She began MCing "in front of a mirror with a can of hairspray for a mic." She was inspired by Ms. Dynamite : "When I heard Ms. Dynamite's track 'Boooo!' in 2001 it inspired me.
