Alcaraz began drawing editorial cartoons for his college paper, San Diego State University's Daily Aztec, in the late 1980s. His first national exposure was in 1985 when Charles Erickson's Hispanic Link News Service began publishing his work. Comics by Alcaraz have appeared in English- and Spanish-language publications including The New York Times, The Village Voice, and The Los Angeles Times. Since 1992 he has drawn a panel for the LA Weekly of Los Angeles. In late 2002, La Cucaracha debuted in daily newspapers nationwide.
His work deals primarily, but not exclusively, with political themes of concern to Latinos.
