Ruquier grew up in a large family of modest means. His father was a locally-based construction worker, and his mother, a housewife.
A happy child, Ruquier breezed through school and entertained his classmates with his very first attempts at satire in the school newspaper. At home, he spent the better part of his time devouring books by Pierre Doris and Jean Yanne and listening to the radio, whose programs he knew by heart.
In 2000, Ruquier began hosting a talk show entitled On a tout essayé ("We've tried everything") on the France 2 television station. From September 2007 to July 2008, he hosted On n'a pas tout dit ("We haven't said everything"), a daily talk show which replaced On a tout essayé.
