Holden was born in Los Angeles, Los Angeles County, California, the daughter of actors Larry Holden and Adrienne Ellis, sister of actor and trainee assistant director Christopher Holden, stepdaughter of film director Michael Anderson and stepsister of actor Michael Anderson, Jr. and producer David Anderson. Her parents divorced in 1975 and Holden was raised in Canada and spent her freshman year at McGill University, then transferring to UCLA to do a BA in Theatre Arts. She has dual citizenship with the United States and Canada.
