This is a chamber opera by Italian composer Lorenzo Ferrero on a libretto by Giuseppe Di Leva written in 2007. In a violent, disastrous setting, various historic-literary episodes succeed one another in which characters, mostly anonymous, are the innocent and unwilling victims of war and its devastating psychological effects. Occurrences from the Roman antiquity, the Balkan civil war, the Franco-Prussian war, and from Japan after its Second World War Capitulation criss-cross each other with short flashes of current events, bringing back the past as a dramatic dimension to our present awareness. The premiere took place on December 9, 2007 at Teatro Comunale di Bologna.
"The death in battle is certainly dramatic, but the fate of those who have nothing to do with the war and never wanted it is even sadder."
Lorenzo Ferrero
