Of English and Scottish descent, Anderson was the son of a British Army officer, he was born in 1923 in Bangalore, South India, and educated at the independent Saint Ronan's School in Worthing, West Sussex (before 1974 simply known as Sussex), and at Cheltenham College in Cheltenham, Gloucestershire, where he met his lifelong friend and biographer, the screenwriter and novelist Gavin Lambert; Wadham College, Oxford, where he studied classics; and Magdalen College, Oxford where he studied English literature.
