The show's format comprises two teams, who attempt to guess a five-letter word given the first letter and place numbers on a 5×5 Lingo board to achieve five covered spaces in a row.
The first version aired from September 28, 1987 to March 25, 1988 with repeats airing until September. It was produced by Ralph Andrews (in association with Bernstein/Hovis Productions) in Canada for syndication by ABR Entertainment in the US. Versions of Lingo were subsequently produced in the United Kingdom, Germany, Spain, Quebec (see Lingo (Quebec game show)), France, Norway, Sweden, Poland and The Netherlands.
