Longyan is situated in the upper reaches of the Jiulong and Ting Rivers. Longyan borders on the municipalities Sanming to the north, Quanzhou to the east, Zhangzhou to the southeast, and the provinces of Jiangxi and Guangdong to the west and south respectively.
The city has a monsoon-influenced humid subtropical climate (Köppen climate classification Cfa), with short, mild winters, and long, hot and humid summers. The monthly daily average temperature ranges from 11.6 °C (52.9 °F) in January to 27.5 °C (81.5 °F) in July. Rainfall is greatest in spring and early summer and at its least in autumn and early winter.
