He presently ranks 14th all-time on the list of Managerial Wins. Piniella grew up in West Tampa, Florida. His Asturian grandparents immigrated to Florida from Asturias, Spain. As a child, he played American Legion Baseball sponsored by Post 248 and PONY League Baseball alongside Tony La Russa, who Piniella has admitted was like an older brother whose shadow he could not move out of.
