The album's creative dynamic was influenced by the end of bandleader Rick White's romantic relationship with Julie Doiron, and the tensions created by his new relationship with Tara White.
In Chart's Top 50 Canadian Albums of All Time polls, Love Tara ranked 35 in 1996 and 37 in 2000. It was also ranked 39 in Bob Mersereau's 2007 book The Top 100 Canadian Albums.
