Madurai Tamil is the dialect which is spoken in the city of Madurai, as well as over a vast geographical area of South Tamil Nadu, the area once ruled by the Pandiya Kings. It differs substantially from Tirunelveli and Nagarkoil Tamil (these two regions were also a part of the Pandiya domain). The common dialect has made the term Madurai refer to a much larger area than it actually is.
