Mahidol University (Thai มหาวิทยาลัยมหิดล, pronounced: ma-hi-don) is a public university in Thailand with campuses in urban and suburban Bangkok, Kanchanaburi, Nakhon Sawan, and Amnat Charoen Provinces. Organized in 1943 as University of Medical Sciences (Thai: มหาวิทยาลัยแพทย์ศาสตร์), the university originally focused on Health Sciences but also expanded to other fields in recent decades. Mahidol University hosted the first medical school of Thailand, the Siriraj Medical School, from which Mahidol University traced its origin. Today, Mahidol University offers a wide range of knowledge fields from natural sciences to liberal arts. In terms of fiscal budget and portion of budget spent on research programs, Mahidol receives the highest budget of any public university: around THB 5 billions per year; a great part of it went into graduate research programs.
